I thought I would take this opportunity to highlight one of my favourite videos of all time. In 1986 Janet Jackson released her breakout album “Control” spawning smash hits like “Nasty”, “What Have You Done for Me Lately” and the title track “Control”. Accompanying these songs were stellar music videos showcasing Janet’s new performance style. However it is the iconic music video for the albums sixth single “The Pleasure Principle” that deserves a special mention.

Despite failing to reach the success of it predecessors, the song has managed to live on through its accompanying music video. Directed by Dominic Sena the performance-based clip sees Janet entering a dimly lit loft to rehearse her dance routine while interacting with the objects around her. Barry Lather who later went on to win an MTV Award for “Best Choreography” in a video choreographed the dance number. Since it’s release the clip has gone on to inspire many notable pop singers such as Britney Spears for her “Stronger” clip as well as Cassie for her debut single “Me & U”.
