One of my favourite music videos from 2014 was Flying Lotus’ “Never Catch Me” ft. Kendrick Lamar. Taken from Lotus’ “You’re Dead” album, the cathartic Hiro Murai directed video opens up in a church mourning the death of two children. However, while the church mourns, the two children rise from their coffins and begin to dance blissfully in unison.
Released from the shackles of this world the kids joyously move down the main aisle of the church unnoticed be the grieving loved ones around them. As they leave the sanctuary the boy briefly looks back at the pain and suffering he has left behind. Climbing on top of the pews they begin to make their way out of the sombre setting of the church into the bright light of the outdoors. The two children then stumble upon a bunch of kids playing and decide to join in on the fun by continuing their dance as they make their way to a hearse to drive themselves to their next destination; their new beginning.
