Review: Hozier “Take Me to Church”

“Take me to church” was Hoziers debut single from his self-titled first album Hozier. Know for his powerful lyrics  and vocals the original music video follows the relationship between two gay men and the  violent homophobic backlash that it results in. A striking parallel to the state and violence many LGBT people are facing in places like Russia with it’s anti gay propaganda laws. Although not the original video for the music video, Sergei Polunin dance captures the passion and pain within Hoziers vocals perfectly, and his skill as a dancer is leads to a mesmerising and hypnotic performance.

“The song was always about humanity at its most natural, and how that is undermined ceaselessly by religious organisations and those who would have us believe they act in its interests. What has been seen growing in Russia is no less than nightmarish, I proposed bringing these themes into the story and Brendan liked the idea.” -Hozier
