Review: Kendrick Lamar “Alright”

Kendrick Lamar and director Colin Tilley deliver a blistering cinematic treatment for Lamar’s newest single “Alright”. Opening with a montage of chaos, the video explores the turbulent environment of the African-American working class and Kendrick’s defiance in the face of generational oppression. The first 2 minutes present a hectic stream of consciousness, both the music and visuals frantically jumping through various concepts relating to gang violence and police brutality, underlying it all is a solemn, poignant monologue. The second half tackles the defiant side of the coin with a celebratory Kendrick flying through air boasting “we gon’ be alright” with scenes of jubilation and dance, inspiring hope in the face of turmoil.
