Review: Kelela “Rewind”

This weeks One-to-Watch shines light on pioneering RnB songstress,  Kelela. She first caught the blogosphere by storm when she released her debut mixtape “Cut 4 Me”. The sensual, distinctive body of work managed to separate her from alternative RnB contemporaries with its unique blend of UK garage and grime sounds, courtesy of  producers like Bok Bok and Kingdom.

The luscious “Rewind” serves as the second single from her soon to be released Hallucinogen EP and the visuals serve a cool low-fi aesthetic. Directed Eric K. Yue (who also delivered another gem in the form of Okay Kaya’s Damn Gravity ) the video deploys tracking shots wherein Kelela levitates alongside the frame to hypnotic effect, as well as novel low angled shots making us feel as if we’re being seduced first hand. The gamut is rounded up by strobe lights and a slick edit.  Hallucinogen EP arrives on October 9th
